Christmas card hanger
Do people still send Christmas cards? I wasn't really expecting to get any this year, but then one arrived in the mail this morning. I mean, it wasn't actually addressed to me, it was addressed to my boyfriend, but I think that totally counts. Anyway, you can use this to hang cards or whatever else you want this festive season.
You'll need...
Getting started
- A package of small wooden pegs - I got mine for $2.50 from one of those cheap stores that sells absolutely everything
- Red and green acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Newspaper
- Red and green yarn
- Crochet hook (optional)
Getting started
- Open your package of pegs and decide how many you want to paint. I opted to do eight red and eight green.
- Paint each peg carefully, making sure not to cove the metal spring bit. Paint your first colour, wash your brush well, and do the next.
- While the pegs are drying, start on your 'rope'.
- Take the red and green yarn and measure off a couple metres of each.
- For this step, I used a crochet hook and did chain stitches all the way to the end of the yarn - this YouTube video explains a chain stitch well. If you don't have a crochet hook, take three strands of yarn and braid them together.
- Make a loop for hanging at each end of your rope. You can simply make a loop and tie a knot, or if you're using a crochet hook, make a loop and join with a slip stitch. Trim any extra yarn.
- Make sure the pegs are totally dry, and then place them along your rope alternating the colours.
- All done! Use 3M hooks or thumb tacks to hang it up and then add Christmas cards as you receive them.
Other options
You could play around with the colours to make it not Christmassy, and use it to hang pictures or something instead. Also, it occurred to me as I was painstakingly painting each peg that I could have bought a package of the coloured ones and just picked out the red and green ones. Might be the better - cheaper - way to go.
Total cost - $2.50 - $15
All I needed was the pegs, so this project cost me $2.50. It might get up to about $15 though if you had to buy two new paints, two new balls of yarn and the pegs as well. If you don't have paints on hand, you'd definitely be better off buying the coloured wooden pegs instead.
